School Safety Patrol

“The patrol movement is unquestionably a fine builder of morale. It also develops a sense of responsibility which cannot but make for good citizenship. It is my sincere hope that it will continue to expand and remain as a permanent feature of our national effort in the interest of traffic safety.”

Franklin D. Roosevelt
President of the United States

Since its inception in 1921, the School Safety Patrol has grown into what is now the largest safety program in the world. As school-age leaders in traffic safety, Patrol members teach other students about traffic safety on a peer-to-peer basis.

AAA School Safety Patrol plays an important role in helping young pedestrians learn and fulfill responsibilities regarding traffic safety. Millions of U.S. boys and girls have honorably served their classmates since the AAA School Safety Patrol program was started in the early 1920s. Interest in the program has spread around the world. At least 30 other countries, including New Zealand, the Netherlands, England, Germany and France, have emulated the AAA School Safety Patrol program.

The experience is the same — a reduction in traffic death rates. Boys and girls who contribute their time as AAA School Safety Patrols deserve special thanks for their efforts. AAA recognizes the AAA School Safety Patrol program as an outstanding school safety activity. We commend school personnel who administer the programs and law enforcement officials who contribute to the success of programs in their communities.

AAA Minneapolis and its Foundation have an exclusive sponsorship of the patrol programs in Hennepin County, reaching approximately 5,000 patrol members at more than 140 schools. Each year, our organization provides all the programs with the necessary patrol training materials, safety supplies, and recognition items completely free of charge. During the program’s local history, there has never been a traffic-related student death at a Patrol-guarded crossing.
