New to Minnesota or First-Time Drivers: AAA Does Not Administer Exams

This appointment type is specifically for state identification cards, not driver's licenses or permits. If you need to transfer your license from another state, take a knowledge exam or road test, find the closest knowledge/road testing station

Required Steps Before Scheduling Your Appointment

  1. To Apply for a first-time Minnesota ID card (not a driver's license or permit):
    Pre-Apply on the State of MN website
    *Completing the Pre-Application does NOT book your appointment. The pre-application will open the MN DVS site in a new window. After completing the online pre-application, you may close the DVS window to return to this screen.
  2. Bring a Primary and Secondary document:

Multiple Transactions: Only one transaction per appointment. If you need to complete more than one transaction during your appointment, choose Multiple Transactions instead.
