New Year, New Resolutions

Jesse Simon

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, I’ve got good news and bad news.

The good news is that if you’re reading this in January, you might be among the 40 percent of Americans who want to eat healthier foods, exercise more, lose weight or spend more time with family in 2020. While this may sound like a great way to start the year, the bad news is that if you’re reading this in February, there is an 80 percent chance that you’ve already given up on your New Year’s resolution. By the end of the year, only 8 percent of people will actually follow through on their resolutions.

While there isn’t a consensus on why people bail on their New Year’s resolutions, some experts believe that making a resolution that is too rigid or lofty is a recipe for failure. Instead of making a big, audacious declaration like, “I’m going to read 50 books this year,” focus on something meaningful but manageable, such as, “I’m going to read every night before bed.” This approach can help you stay on track and build confidence and momentum toward your New Year’s resolution. When you focus on the process—not the outcome—you’ll have a better chance of sticking to the plan.

That leaves me to my New Year’s resolution for Live|Play|AAA, which is to get readers more involved in our member magazine. Stay tuned for opportunities throughout the year!

Happy New Year!
