How to Budget for a Honeymoon

Renata Faeth

For most couples, a honeymoon getaway is anticipated nearly as much as the wedding itself, because leaving alone together on a relaxing vacation is a celebration of what they enjoy most - each other’s company. It’s also a financial investment, so wise couples plan the honeymoon cost right along with wedding expenses. Here are some tips on budgeting for a well-planned, stress-free getaway:

Use a Travel Advisor

AAA Minneapolis has a dedicated team of Romance Specialists with the expertise and background on destinations, accommodations, “hidden gems” and important travel tips for a safe and relaxing vacation. They also know how to help you save money by focusing on what’s most important to you.

Start saving early

Most financial professionals suggest that if you need to go into debt to take a vacation, you can’t afford it. But if you plan well in advance by setting aside a certain amount of money in regular installments, you can have it paid for by the time your final payment is due, usually 60 to 90 days prior to your departure. Most cruises and tours require a down payment, so you don’t have to pay it all at once.

Consider the season

Take Europe, for example: high season is mid-May through mid-October, so that’s when prices are the highest. Travel in November, and you can save a considerable amount on accommodations and airfare. Perhaps swap those savings out for better hotels, more meals out, or that down payment on a house. Note: Weather may not be as appealing in the off-season, but crowds will be lower and lines shorter at all the popular attractions and museums.

Compare destinations

Tahiti for example, is a dream honeymoon for many couples, but airfare and the average nightly cost at most resorts are substantially higher than a comparable resort in the Caribbean or Hawaii. The costs of an upscale cruise or all-inclusive resort may not be as high as anticipated when comparing dining and activity expenses. A Travel Advisor can help you sort out what is within reach now, and what might be the ideal anniversary getaway later

Use a registry

Add your honeymoon as an option to your wedding gift registry! Many guests are thrilled to help you realize your travel dreams.
