Safety, Safety, Safety

From patrollers and car seats to buses and Halloween, safety is the priority.

We at AAA Minneapolis have been sponsoring School Safety Patrol programs for more than 140 schools across Hennepin County since the 1920s. We recently received a letter from Katie Bloomer, manager of the Lake Harriet Upper Campus School Safety Patrol program. The letter was about School Safety Patroller Hagi Galvan, recognizing his heroic efforts.

Hagi, a fifth-grade student, was patrolling a crosswalk on a cold January day. The shift was almost over, so his fellow patrollers walked back to the school. Hagi was about to head back, too, when he saw a young student, Asher Strong, who needed to cross the street.

Hagi performed his typical duties, calling out “Alert” and “Flags out,” then stepping into the street with his flag to allow Asher to cross. There was one vehicle that came to a stop, but another oncoming vehicle was not slowing down.

The stopped car started honking its horn, but the other vehicle kept coming. Hagi saw the events unfolding and noticed Asher was not aware of the oncoming vehicle. Hagi dashed farther into the street, grabbed Asher by his backpack and pulled him out of the way, just as the vehicle tried to swerve away.

If Hagi hadn’t pulled Asher out of the way, he would have been struck by the vehicle. The woman sitting in the stopped vehicle rushed over to them and threw her arms around Asher, sobbing. The driver was Asher’s mother.

Hagi is a hero, which is why he was presented with the Life Saving Award from AAA Minneapolis. Thanks to safety patrollers such as him, our school crosswalks remain safe.
