Day 1: Arrive Munich

Arrive by plane or train in Munich, capital of Bavaria and home of the biggest celebration of beer, Oktoberfest. At any time of year, Munich is a mecca for beer drinkers, car lovers, fashionistas, history buffs and anyone looking for "gemütlichkeit" (sense of well-being). And don't forget to try the Weisswurst (white sausage), Bavaria's traditional sausage. (Accommodations, Munich)

Day 2: Munich

Use the Hop-on/Hop-off City Bus Tour to visit the Viktualienmarkt (daily food market), BMW museum, medieval Altstadt (old town), Spielzeugmuseum (toy museum) and famed Frauenkirche cathedral. Enjoy a Dinner at a typical Bavarian restaurant for a night to remember. (Breakfast, Dinner, Accommodations, Munich)

Day 3: Regensburg Day Trip

Leave your bags in Munich and take a 1.5 hour train ride to Regensburg, with one of Europe's best-preserved medieval city centers. Have lunch in the Historic Sausage Kitchen restaurant, which served workers who built the 12th-century Stone Bridge next to it. Run by the same family for generations, the restaurant features potato soup and Regensburger sausage, considered by some to be the ultimate Wurst accompanied by sweet mustard and sauerkraut. Spend the rest of your day strolling through Regensburg's stunning medieval townscape on the Danube River. Return to Munich by train. (Breakfast, Accommodations, Munich)

Day 4: Munich to Nuremberg

It takes just 1 hour 15 minutes by rail (1st class ticket included) from Munich to Nuremberg, the capital of the Franconia region. Get settled in your hotel and use the 2-Day Nuremberg Card to explore the city's many historic sights: Kaiserburg castle, half-timbered medieval houses (almost all were completely rebuilt after World War II), the Albrecht Durer house, fabulous Germanisches Nationalmuseum and a mind-boggling number of eating establishments. Nuremberg is where Bratwurst, different from Weisswurst, was first served. True Nuremberger Bratwurst is slim, usually served several at a time, and a serious gourmet delicacy. Enjoy a traditional Dinner that is included during your 2-night stay. (Breakfast, Munich; Dinner, Accommodations, Nuremberg)

Day 5: Bamberg Day Trip

Nuremberg is close to several enticing beer and brats day trip destinations - but none appeals to the eye, as well as the taste buds, as much as Bamberg, a mere 35-45 minute train ride away. Built on 7 hills like Rome, after which it was modeled in the 11th-century, Bamberg is a jewelbox collection of historic architecture, particularly baroque, and was virtually untouched by wartime devastation. Nine breweries produce over 50 varieties of beer, including the distinctive local specialty, Rauchbier (smoke beer). Good thing you're taking the train back to Nuremberg for the night and not driving! (Breakfast, Accommodations, Nuremberg)

Day 6: Depart Nuremberg

Breakfast in Nuremberg and then depart to Berlin, Wurzburg, or your next Avanti destination. Plan on returning soon to Bavaria - they'll be waiting with brats and beer in hand. (Breakfast, Nuremberg)
