For seasoned Travel Advisors like Ellen Almen-Dale, taking the pandemic break from her favorite pastime is especially difficult, because her favorite pastime IS travel. She lives for it.

“I’m fascinated by European history, so I look for destinations that allow me to explore it in depth. Cities like Vienna, Paris, and London – they all have great museums, interesting local culture, and also beautiful surrounding countryside for side trips.”

Almen-Dale has traveled to Europe (and the rest of the world) independently, on guided tours, and on both ocean and river cruises, so her experience is a bonus for travelers who want an insider’s advice.  Like most of her colleagues, she usually has a trip on the horizon to look forward to, but with international travel on pause, she’s stuck in the dream phase – for now.

Portugal is on her wish list. It’s a popular destination these days, and not just in the traditional sense.  Travelers are enthralled by the hilly coastal capital, Lisbon, rich in maritime history and pastel-colored architecture dated back to the 5th century.  They’re cruising the Duoro River in the country’s northern wine country, and biking their way through the southern region, where gently rolling hills, picturesque villages, and flat countryside are accentuated by golden wheat fields and Portugal’s famous twisted cork trees. Portugal is an easy country to navigate independently, with excellent train service between major cities, and all along the southern coast, the Algarve, where fishing villages, sandy beaches, and golf resorts make for ideal vacation spots.

For Ellen Almen-Dale, that opportunity can’t come soon enough.
