During Mayan times, Cozumel was a sacred island covered with temples and shrines to the goddess Ixchel. Today it's known as an underwater paradise encircled by spectacular coral reefs, including Palancar Reef, a mountainous underwater formation six miles long and 300 feet high.

Visit the Museum of the Island of Cozumel in downtown San Miguel. Chankanaab National Park provides an eco-archaeological experience. Or hike the Botanical Garden trail. Spot crocodiles, iguanas and giant turtles at Punta Sur Ecological Reserve. Discover 220 species of birds at Colombia Lagoon.
Dive and snorkel in the only inland coral reef on the planet. Whether you are a pro-diver or a first-time snorkeler, the waters here are sprinkled with accessible sites that are perfect for exploration. Jacques Cousteau raved about the spectacular coral reefs that encircle the island, including Palancar Reef — a mountainous underwater formation six-miles long and 300-feet high that attracts scuba divers and snorkelers from around the world. Shopaholics and souvenir hunters can choose from a wide array of stores and markets. From San Miguel’s main square to the backstreets of downtown, you’ll find a gold mine of gems to take home. Organic vanilla, chocolate and multicolored talavera pottery are just some of the popular local products.
